چکیده

Knowledge of thermal conductance of carbon nanotubes under mechanical deformation is important to characterize the robustness of carbon nanotube heat conduction. In this study, using molecular dynamic simulations, we have calculated thermal conductance of an elastically buckled single-walled carbon nanotube. A local buckle was formed by mechanically bending a carbon nanotube at an angle of 60°, and thermal conductance through the buckle was calculated by a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics approach. The thermal conductance exhibits strong diameter dependence, correlated with the strain energy generated in the buckle. Despite the highly stained deformation, the thermal resistance across a buckle is similar to that of a point defect and heterotube junction, revealing a robust nature of carbon nanotube heat conduction to buckling deformation. *[email protected]

Carbon Nanotube Thermal Pastes for Improving Thermal Contacts

The use of 0.6 vol.% single-walled carbon nanotubes in a poly(ethylene glycol)based dispersion gave a thermal paste that was as effective as solder for improving thermal contacts. A thermal contact conductance of 20 · 10 W m K was attained. An excessive amount of nanotubes (e.g. 1.8 vol.%) degraded the performance, because of conformability loss. The nanotubes were more effective than hexagonal...

Crossover from Ballistic to Diffusive Thermal Transport in Carbon Nanotubes

We present a theoretical scheme that seamlessly handles the crossover from fully ballistic to diffusive thermal transport regimes and apply it to carbon nanotubes. At room temperature, the micrometer-length nanotubes belong to the intermediate regime in which ballistic and diffusive phonons coexist, and the thermal conductance exhibits anomalous nonlinear tube-length dependence due to this coex...

Thermal conductance of the junction between single-walled carbon nanotubes

The thermal conductances of the carbon nanotube (CNT) junctions that would be found in a CNT aerogel are predicted using molecular dynamics simulations. At a temperature of 300 K, the thermal conductance of a perpendicular junction converges to 40 pW/K as the CNT lengths approach 100 nm. The key geometric parameter affecting the thermal conductance is the angle formed by the two CNTs. At pressu...

Heat Transfer Problems Related with Carbon Nanotubes

Several heat transfer problems related to single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are considered using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The Brenner potential (Brenner, 1990) with the simplified form (Yamaguchi and Maruyama, 1998) is employed as the potential function between carbon and carbon within a nanotube. MD simulations of thermal conductivity along a nanotube, isotope effect in longit...
